PERIODONTICS

Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The choice of intervention depends on the degree of inflammation and degradation of periodontal tissues.

Root planing and scaling

Root planing and scaling is a deep cleaning procedure performed under local anaesthetic to treat periodontitis. Periodontitis is a chronic infection of the gums that progressively destroys the bone and structures supporting the teeth. It is caused by bacteria present under the gums.

This is a scaling procedure that goes beyond routine cleaning; it targets periodontal pockets, the spaces created between tooth and gum where bacteria, debris and tartar accumulate. The aim is to reduce the depth of these pockets and help the gums to re-adhere to the teeth, thereby reducing the risk of progression of periodontal disease.

Gum grafting

Gum grafting is recommended for patients with severely thinning gums. A minimum thickness of gingiva is required for healthy tooth support. The procedure is also recommended for patients suffering from gum recession, where part of the tooth root is exposed, resulting in high sensitivity and an increased risk of tooth decay.

Grafting involves removing a fragment of gum tissue, often from the palate, and grafting it onto the affected area. This procedure thickens the gums, protects the root of the tooth, improves aesthetics and prevents future dental problems.
